TIPS OF THE DAY

Outdoor Fire Pots

Even though the evenings in October and November are much cooler, it doesn't mean you cannot use your deck for relaxation and entertainment!
These outdoor fire-pots and fireplaces are becoming more and more popular as a means of providing warmth and light in outdoor spaces at night. There’s really nothing quite as cozy and romantic as a natural flame from an outdoor lighting fire pot, and the light from a natural flame has a beautiful ambient quality no electric outdoor light can match. There’s a huge range of outdoor fireplaces, firepots and fire bowls to choose from, in every shape, size and style you can imagine.

There are four general types of outdoor lighting fire-pots:
  • Fire bowls, fire pits and outdoor fireplaces are used to burn natural wood, so they’re like having a real campfire on the patio. They come in natural or synthetic stone, copper, cast iron and stainless steel. Some come with a cooking grill, for a real wood fire barbecue, and most have a wire mesh screen to protect you from flying embers.

  • Chiminea firepots are also designed to contain natural wood fires. A chimney structure over the fire vents the smoke and embers upwards. Chimineas come in a variety of shapes and sizes, in copper or stone.

  • Gas burning terracotta fire pots are very safe to use, and light in minutes. Many feature attractive ceramic logs or lava rocks for an authentic campfire look. Gas burning firepots are perfect for creating a gentle warmth around a small outdoor area.

  • Oil burning firepots are designed to be used as small natural lighting fixtures around the patio or on the patio table. They come in all kinds of attractive designs, in cast iron, brass, copper, stainless steel and ceramic materials, and they burn citronella oil or kerosene.

Whichever solution you choose will extend the season during which you can continue to enjoy the outdoors on your deck!

Bring the Garden inside!

Paper whites will add cheerful blooms and a lovely fragrance to your home throughout the fall and winter. You can plant them anytime - expect them to bloom about 4-6 weeks later. Start new ones every two weeks for a continuous display.

Planting them is easy! All you need is a bowl, pebbles or marbles, and bulbs. (You can also use a pot and potting soil in place of the bowl and pebbles). Put some pebbles in the bottom of the bowl. Place bulbs pointed side up on the pebbles. Add enough water to keep the root end of the bulbs moist. Plants should flower in 4- 6 weeks.

Plant amaryllis now for gorgeous flowers in January and February. All you need is a pot that's a couple of inches wider than the bulb and some potting soil. Plant the bulb in the pot so that about half of it is beneath the soil and half stays above. Wet the soil and place in a warm spot with low light until growth begins. A dark corner near the furnace or on top of a water heater works well. When a leaf starts to grow out the top, it's time to move your plant to a warm, sunny spot. Water with a mild fertilizer solution when the soil starts to feel dry on top. Plant should flower in 10-12 weeks from planting, sometimes sooner.
