Custom-built Screened Porches
in the Raleigh, Durham, Chapel Hill Area
of North Carolina
Each screened porch Anthony & Company builds is custom fit for each customer.
We have no "cookie cutter" designs; we sit down with each customer to work out a
design and choose materials that fits their home and neighborhood best. Most of our
designs fall under two categories, "traditional" or "post & beam"
Anthony & Company Construction strives to use the best possible products to build
an outdoor structure with the best possible quality. In North Carolina decks and
screened porches are especially susceptible to damage from the extreme weather
we endure.
The material you find at your typical lumber store is #2 grade (premium or standard
grade) wet treated lumber, it is sold completely saturated with the treatment chemicals,
installed wet, and then dries after installation. This material will shrink, cup, twist, and
bow, and is not covered by warranty... Who wants to spend thousands of dollars on
an outdoor room addition just to have cosmetic and structural issues after one season?
A.J. Shirely, the president of Anthony & Company Construction, has been working
with treated lumber, Brazilian hardwoods and composite materials for over 20 years,
and through the "school of hard knocks" has learned which products hold up the best
in our area.
For this reason, when Brazilian hardwoods are out of budget, we generally recommend
using only #1 grade dry-kilned (KDAT) products for all of your face materials. This
material should be used for decking (flooring) hand rails, and posts. We like to use
the Cox brand Durapine decking and rail materials.

These materials are a #1 grade material that has been kiln
dried after treatment. It is already dry so it doesn't shrink, twist, and bow after
installation. And it will still look great years later.
